The Challenge
Al-Nour Logistics, a growing SME based in Tripoli, was running their critical fleet management and accounting software on two aging physical servers in a dusty office closet.
The Risks:
- Hardware Failure: server warranties had expired, and a crash would mean total data loss.
- Accessibility: Staff could only access files when physically in the office, severely limiting remote work capabilities.
- Cost: Replacing the servers would require a capital investment of 40,000+ LYD, plus ongoing electricity and coding costs.
The Approach: Lift-and-Shift vs. Re-Platform
SmartSITT evaluated two migration strategies:
- Re-Platforming: Rewriting apps for the cloud (Too expensive/slow).
- Lift-and-Shift: Moving existing virtual machines to the cloud (Fastest ROI).
We chose a hybrid Lift-and-Shift approach to minimize disruption while immediately retiring the risky hardware.
Phase 1: Assessment & Planning (Week 1)
We used Azure Migrate to assess the dependencies of their SQL database and file server. We identified that 40% of their stored data was "cold" and could be moved to cheaper storage tiers.
Phase 2: The Migration (Week 2)
Over a single weekend, we replicated their Virtual Machines to Microsoft Azure (UAE North Region). We utilized Azure Site Recovery to sync data in real-time until the cutover moment.
Phase 3: The Modern Workplace (Week 3)
Instead of just moving servers, we migrated their file shares to SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business. This allowed employees to access shipping documents from their mobile phones anywhere in Libya.
Results
- Cost Savings: By eliminating hardware refreshes, electricity, and AC costs, Al-Nour reduced their 3-year IT Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by 50%.
- Agility: A new remote branch in Benghazi was onboarded in hours, not weeks, simply by logging into the cloud portal.
- Security: Data is now encrypted at rest and backed up automatically to a secondary region.
